Thomas E. Kaut, 91, of Center Point, Iowa, died Thursday, July 31, 2014, at Living Center East. Services: 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 3, 2014, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point, conducted by Rev. Melaine VanWeelden. Family will greet friends from 2:00 until service time. Burial: with military rites at Center Point Cemetery, Center Point.
Survivors include his children, Lyle (Kelly) Kaut, Barb (Jim) Driscoll, and Jon (Chari) Kaut; eight grandchildren, Roger, Thomas, Jennifer, Brian, Mallorie, McKenna, Heather and Heidi; eleven great-grandchildren; and his faithful companion, Molly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 58 years, Margaret; son, Thomas Ray Kaut; brothers, Al, Ralph, Harry, Raymond and Calvin Kaut; and sisters, Margaret Cherry and Marie Bosley.
Thomas was born on April 30, 1923, in Arroll, Missouri, son of George and Harriett (Millbanks) Kaut. He attended school in Arroll and helped out on the family farm. He served in the United States Navy as a Fireman 1st Class during World War II from 1943-1945. Thomas worked as a lumberjack in Oregon. Upon his return to Vinton he worked as Ervin Buick Dealership. On September 25, 1955, he married Margaret Hendryx in Vinton, Iowa, and together they started the Standard Gas Station in Center Point. In the late 60’s he went to work for the Linn County Road Department for 21 years. The couple then moved to Winfield where he drove trucks for Feed Depo and then later for the Lumber Yard. Margaret died July 3, 2014. Thomas was a member of the Center Point American Legion Dye Benion Post #297, the Lion’s Club and served many years on the Center Point City Council. He enjoyed wood working, making stained glass, gardening and antique cars. The couple loved going to sporting events.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Courageous in Monticello, Olivette Mission in Cedar Rapids, Alice United Methodist Church in Center Point, or American Legion Dye Benion Post #297 in Center Point.
