Thomas was born November 4, 1916, the son of John W. and Ora Alice (Morris) Jackson in Cory, Indiana. On July 20, 1941, he married Thelma M. Wellman in Jasonville, Indiana. The couple farmed in Indiana and Missouri before moving to Marion in 1968. He was employed at the Cedar Rapids Post Office, retiring in 1990.

Thomas enjoyed gardening, giving most of his produce to the neighbors, writing letters to the editor at the Marion Times and the Gazette.

He was in excellent health until just recent months. His faith sustained him as his health failed. Thomas was a dreamer, a realist and if a goal became unreachable, he would change his goal.
