Thomas M. Horan, 78, of Marion, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2013, at Crestview Acres, Marion, following a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, by Father David O’Connor. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion with a vigil service beginning at 4:00 p.m. Burial: 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 12, 2013 at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Clermont, Iowa.
Thomas was born October 4, 1934, in Clermont, Iowa, the son of Richard and Nellie (Powers) Horan. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Waterloo, Iowa. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War. Following his service, he enrolled in the University of Iowa, receiving a B.A. degree and going on to earn a Juris law degree in 1963.
Tom married Virginia Moore on August 11, 1962, in Waterloo, Iowa. They moved to Marion in 1963, where he began his professional career with the White and Stone Law Firm. He served as Assistant Linn County Attorney from 1964 until 1974. In 1979, he was appointed a district court judge of the 6th judicial district, where he remained until his retirement. Thomas loved his family and enjoyed his profession immensely. He and his wife, Virginia, enjoyed traveling, observing nature, and discussing politics. In the past several years, “Grandpa Tom” liked going to Hawkeye football games and golfing with his grandsons. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Virginia; daughter, Dianne Kobberdahl of West Des Moines; sons, Michael Horan of San Francisco, CA, Stephen Horan of Marion, and Alan Horan of Denver, CO; two grandsons, Jacob, who is studying music at the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire, and Alex Kobberdahl of West Des Moines; brother, John of Waterloo, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, James in infancy, William, Dennis, Arthur, and Charles Horan.
