Theodore H. β€œTed” Smyth, 86, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa went to be with the Family of Christ in Heaven on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, following a good life. A visitation will be held from 4 – 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. The funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Private family burial will be at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Williamsburg, Iowa.

Ted was born on April 17, 1937, in Cedar Rapids, to James Harvey and Kathryn Margaret (Lehnen) Smyth. At the time, his family was living in Swisher, Iowa. From there they moved to Lisbon, Mechanicsville, Vinton, farm South of Ely, and then to Cedar Rapids.

Ted graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1955 and went into the Navy for two years during which time he married Mary LeAnne Mumm February 24, 1957, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Later, Mary Le and Ted were charter members at Concordia Lutheran Church and Ted was in the first confirmation class and the first elected Chairman of the Congregation.

Upon completing his service in the Navy in September of 1957, he worked for Penford until February 1960 and went to Collins Radio in the Wood Model Shop. There he spent 32 years making wood models, patterns, displays, prototypes, etc. He was also involved with the Apollo program. Ted retired in August of 1992.

Prior to retirement he and his family enjoyed traveling many places in the US and Canada. He and Mary Le spent a few winters traveling down south and wintering in Arizona. During his retirement he worked part time at Hy-Vee on Johnson Avenue and made displays for Rockwell Collins in his spare time at home. In May of 2011, the couple moved to Deer Ridge Meth-Wick Community to spend the rest of their many years of married life together.

Ted is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary Le Smyth; children, Lynn (Ed) St. John of Solon, and Steve Smyth of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his brother, James Smyth of Barstow, California.

Ted was preceded in death by their eldest son, Scott Blaine Smyth; daughter, Stacy Louise Smyth; parents, James and Kathryn Smyth; father and mother-in-law, Otto and Alma Koehn Mumm; sister, Kathryn Louise Smyth; and sisters-in-law, Joyce Walker and Sally Smyth, both of California.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Mercy, Meth-Wick Community or Trinity Lutheran Church.
