Theodore "Ted? P. Grenis, 81, of 2790 19th Avenue, died Thursday, March 15, 2007, in St. Luke?s Hospital, from complications of cancer. Memorial Mass: 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2007, at St. Matthew?s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Mark Osterhaus. Inurnment: 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2007, at Rogers Grove Cemetery in rural Ely. The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; his children, Tony of Somonauk, Illinois and children, Elizabeth and Jessica; Ted (Becky) of Ely and children, Brock and
Brooke; Sharon (Larry) Henderson of Slayton, Minnesota and children, Amy, Andy and Annie; Connie (Tom) Glavin of Hinsdale, Illinois and children, Maggie and Tim; Karen (Roger) Smith of Buford, Georgia and child, Jamie; Tom (Charry) of San Diego, California and children, Willie and Charlie; and Tim (JoDee) of Broomfield, Colorado and children, Kylee, Taylor and Quyncie; and a sister, Connie Rinchak of Lake Station, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Emily Grenis.
Ted was born the son of Anthony J. and Constance (Tamalunas) Grenis on May 18, 1925, in Gary, Indiana. He graduated from Tolleston High School in 1946 after enlisting in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 during World War II. He served primarily in the Caribbean Sea as a Sonar Technician responsible for safeguarding U.S. merchant convoys from German submarine attacks. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Hutton on June 5, 1947, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Ted worked for Rockwell-Collins for over thirty years as an Electronics Test Foreman. He was a member of St. Matthew?s Catholic Church, Marion American Legion Post 298 and the Linn County Conservation Board. Ted served on the Linn-Mar Community School District Board of Education for 12 years including several years as President.
Over the years, Ted enjoyed many activities and hobbies. He was a HAM radio operator for many years and also built and flew remote-controlled competition model airplanes. He always enjoyed the outdoors, and in his younger years he was an avid trapper followed by many years of deer hunting. He loved all types of fishing and was also an avid gardener.
