THELMA A. HUMPHREYS, 80, of 818 22nd Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, November 14, 2004, at Living Center East, Cedar Rapids, following a courageous battle with cancer. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 17, 2004, at the First Christian Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. James Chesnutt. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 16, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Ellen Kirkpatrick of Coralville, Linda Hinderks of Cedar Rapids, Lorna Fulton of Littleton, Colorado, and John (Sue) Humphreys of Troy Mills; ten grandchildren, Brian Hedlund, Tamara Facion, Melissa Abraham, Lindsay Hinderks, Brandon Hinderks, Jade Opfer, Ashley Fulton, Mitchel Humphreys, Tyler Humphreys and Griffin Humphreys; eight great-grandchildren; six brothers, Leland (Julie) Wise, Manuel (Dorothy) Wise, Richard "Artie? (Nancy) Wise, Leonard (June) Wise, Laurence (Liz) Wise and Melvin Wise, all of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Evelyn Humphreys of Cedar Rapids; a sister-in-law, Alice Broxey of Cedar Rapids; and special friends, Howard and Marian Johnson, Steve and Sue Livermore and Chuck and Mary Ann Washler.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Phyllis Wennermark and Ruth Jean Wise.
Thelma was born April 8, 1924, the daughter of John and Luella (Myers) Wise, in Athol, South Dakota. On January 7, 1947, she was united in marriage to Charles Humphreys in Cedar Rapids. He died in 1982. Thelma worked at Collins Radio on the assembly line during World War II and at Neisner?s Variety Store for many years. For 28 years, Thelma worked for the Cedar Rapids School System, retiring from Wilson Jr. High School in Food Service. She enjoyed sports, especially the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes, preparing meals for church activities and being with her family and friends.
Thelma was a 50-year member of the First Christian Church, where she served as a Deaconess and was active in CWF and Friendship Class. She also was a member of the American Legion Hanford Post 5 Auxillary, Twin Club, Ellis YMCA, Jefferson Band Parents and AARP.
A special thank you to Dr. James Chesnutt and members of the First Christian Church for their friendship and prayers. Also thanks to Dr. Hilliard, Dr. Klein and nurse Kim, Dr. Oliviera and Dr. Ghosh of Iowa Blood & Cancer Care and St. Luke?s Hospice for their excellent medical care and to the staff of Living Center East for the compassionate care, especially Molly James and Patty Blair.
