Thelda Elizabeth Franklin, 87, of 5040 Mohawk Avenue in Marion, died Wednesday, December 1, 2004, in her home following a short illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 6, 2004, at Marion Christian Church, 1050 McGowan Boulevard in Marion by Rev. Dr. Robert Kunz, Rev. Dr. James Warren and Rev. Herbert Kohl. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is a t Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion where friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Sunday and at the church on Monday one hour prior to the service.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Lenz and husband Dale of Green Bay, Wisconsin and Marilyn Rambo of Marion; two sons, Rev. Dr. Ronald Franklin of Boone and Robert Franklin and Sally Berner of Green Bay, Wisconsin; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; half-brother, Burt Sharp of Oakfield, Wisconsin; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters; a brother; an infant son, Richard; and an infant granddaughter, Kimberly Anne Starks.
Thelda was born October 15, 1917, in Canalou, Missouri, to Edward Cannon and Susie Earls Cannon. She came to Cedar Rapids in 1923 with her mother and stepfather, Orvis Sharp. Thelda graduated in 1936 from Franklin High School. She married Clifford O. Franklin on January 16, 1938, and they celebrated over 59 years together before his death in 1997.
Thelda was a member of Marion Christian Church for 55 years, where she faithfully taught Sunday school for 45 years. She also served as an elder, chancel choir member, Christian Women?s Fellowship President, editor of the church newsletter for 25 years, and on various committees. She was employed as a bookkeeper and receptionist for over six years in the office of Dr. John J. Keith.
Thelda devoted her life to God, her family and friends, and will always be remembered for her gentle nature and love for children.
Memorials may be given to Marion Christian Church or St. Luke?s Hospice in Thelda?s memory.
