Suzanne Rosenbaum Katz, 89, of Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids, passed away July 11, 2011. Suzanne was born on April 30, 1922, in Waukegan, Illinois, to Martha and Joseph Sapiro. Suzanne is survived by her husband Bert, whom she married in 1969; her daughter, Nancy of Santa Cruz, CA; 2 step-daughters, Toni Neta (Giora) and Sally Feniger (Bill); step-grandchildren, Erin, David (Liz), Derek Feniger; great-grandson, Yale Feniger; sisters-in-law, Ruth Luskin of Highland Park, IL and Catherine Engle of Lake Forest, IL; nieces; nephews; and friends.
Her first husband, Elmer Rosenbaum, of Cedar Rapids, IA, preceded her in death in 1964; and a son, Louis Rosenbaum died in 1999. Suzanne went on with life but the pain of his loss stayed with her forever, and she was never the same after his death. At that time, Suzanne set up a memorial fund with the Greater Cedar Rapids Foundation in memory of Louis and his father, Elmer, to assist children who have lost one or both parents due to death or other tragic circumstances, for education, musical, athletic assistance, as well as psychological and/or trauma counseling, medical needs, etc.
Suzanne was educated at Waukegan Township High School, University of Illinois, and Lake College of Commerce. Before her marriage to Elmer, she was employed as secretary to the Commander of the Ninth Naval District Disbursing Office at Great Lakes, IL and the Waukegan News-Sun.
She was active when her children were of school age, at Johnson School PTA, Cub Scouts, Campfire Girls, and Washington High School Orchestra Parents. She was a willing volunteer for fund-raising in Cedar Rapids when volunteers would go door-to-door soliciting, particularly in her neighborhood. She did it so often that when neighbors would see her coming, they knew the reason. She then said she was willing to work, but requested that she be given a different area.
Her memberships included Temple Judah and its Sisterhood, Hadassah, Elmcrest Country Club, and Mission Hills Country Club, Rancho Mirage, CA.
She and her husband Bert were loyal supporters of Mercy Hospital and Hallmar. She was a member of the Marion Library Board Foundation and she and Bert endowed the Children’s Summer Reading Program of the Marion Library. They also endowed scholarships at Kirkwood Community College and Mt. Mercy University. Suzanne and Bert were made honorary citizens of Marion in August 2000, because of their contributions to the city of Marion.
Suzanne enjoyed tennis; she was the Girl’s City Champion of Waukegan, Illinois from 1936 to 1939, and part of the duo who were doubles champions. She was an avid golfer, golfing at Elmcrest Country Club for many years. In 1979, she won the 9 Hole City Women’s Golf Tournament of Cedar Rapids. She also won the Senior Women’s Golf Tournament at Elmcrest in 1993, 1998, and 1999.
Suzanne and Bert spent their winters in Rancho Mirage, CA where she thrived in the desert climate and enjoyed the company of their many friends there. She was an honest, sincere person whom friends remembered, even from her high school days, as “telling it like it was.”
The family would like to thank Dr. Jolynn Glanzer for her outstanding care, and her compassion and sensitivity to Suzanne’s needs. They would also like to thank the Caregivers from Homewatch Caregivers for their care, support, and untiring efforts in helping to make Suzanne’s life as comfortable as possible.
There will be a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011, at Temple of Judah in Cedar Rapids. Inurnment: Eben-Israel Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, at a later date. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to the Hall Perrine Cancer Center, the Marion Library Children’s Summer Reading Program, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
