Stephen T. Karras, 94, of 1338 J. Avenue NE, died Thursday, December 14, 2006, at St. Luke?s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, after a short illness. Services: 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 18, 2006, at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Cyprian Sas. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, December 17, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where there will be a Trisagion service at 7:00 p.m. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Karras and George Karras, both of Cedar Rapids; a brother, George and nephew in Greece; nephews, George Miller of Lombard, Illinois and James Miller of South Bend, Indiana; and a grandson, Stephan Karras, a student at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anthoula Karras, exactly one month prior to his death; a brother, John; and a sister, Cleo.
Stephen was born February 16, 1912, in a mountainous village named Asprangeli in Northern Greece. He immigrated to America in 1930, entering through Ellis Island. New York City was his home in the 1930?s. Stephen was a World War II Veteran. He landed at Utah Beach during the D-Day Invasion and was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge. Upon his discharge, Stephen settled in the Chicago area, where he met his future wife. On December 7, 1947, they were married in Cedar Rapids and have stayed there for the remainder of their lives.
Stephen was a member of the St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, National 4th Infantry 3rd Armored Division and was a life-long member of the VFW. He was a loving husband and a good father whose absence is keenly missed.
Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 788.
