Stavros Hadjis, 89, of 430 31st Street S.E., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, April 11, 2008, in Mercy Hallmar Residential Care Center, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness with cancer. Services: 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 14, 2008, at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Ciprian Sas. Friends may call from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, April 13, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a Trisagion Service at 5:00 p.m. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his children, Demetrios (Renee) Hadjis, Basil (Lynn) Hadjis and Alex (Mindy) Hadjis all of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Peter, Katie, Amie (David) Schumacher, Theo, Adam, Nick and John; one great granddaughter, Jianna Hadjis; and a brother, Alexander Hadjiathanassiou of Pireus, Greece.
Stavros was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bessie; eight brothers; and four sisters.
Stavros was born September 13, 1918, in Karlovassi, Samos Greece, the son of Demetrios and Despina (Peristeridis) Hadjiathanassiou. He proudly served in the Royal Greek Navy from 1937?"1944, as a Chief Steward during WWII. He then served in the Merchant Marines traveling the world three times. Stavros loved sharing stories of his world travels which earned him the nickname the “King of Samos”. He came to Philadelphia in 1948, traveled to Waterloo, Iowa, to visit his uncle. He was introduced to Bessie Santas and married her on June 4, 1950, in Cedar Rapids. She died February 1, 1994. He worked at Penick and Ford for 28 years and then on February 6, 1976, he co-founded the Vernon Inn working as the chef and chief maitre d.
Stavros was a member of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church.
