Stanley E. Potter, 81, died Tuesday, December 28, 2004, in his home following a lengthy illness. A service and tribute to Stanley?s life will be held at a later time. Arrangements with Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Potter of Marion, two daughters, Penny Potter of Wasilla, Alaska, Judy Potter of Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael & Jill Potter of Willis, Texas; one grandson Mason Potter of Willis, Texas; one brother, Ralph Potter of Marion. Stan was the son of Walter and Helen Potter of Marion.

Born September 10, 1923, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Stanley resided in Marion, Iowa where he attended school and graduated from Marion High School 1942. Stanley played quarterback on the Marion Indians football team. On November 11, 1942, Stanley enlisted in the Army Air Corp and proudly served as a Lieutenant and a Bombardier on B-17 Flying Fortress as part of "Perry?s Pirates?, in the 8th Air Force 385th Heavy Bomber Group - 551st Squadron, stationed at "Great Ashfield? near Elmswell, England. Stanley survived 35 Combat Missions where they bombed targets throughout Germany, France (including the D-Day Invasion at Normandy), Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Holland. He was wounded on a mission over Mainz, Germany on October 9, 1944. Lt. Potter also received the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) resulting from a mission over St. Lo, France on July 25, 1944. He was discharged September 29, 1945.

Lt. Potter received the following awards and Decorations: Distinguished Flying Cross, Four Oak Leaf Cluster Air Medals, Honorable Service Lapel Button World, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Medal with Five Bronze Stars and WWII Victory Medal.

Stanley Potter was a devoted Husband, Father and Son. He served as President of the Lisbon School Board and attended all school events that his children participated in. He also was a member of the 8th Airforce Historical Society, both National and State, 385th Bomb Group and the American Legion, Post 298.

Stanley enjoyed the outdoors on his acreage "Hickory Grove Acres? with his family and his faithful dog "Riley?. He loved all types of nature and working with flowers, plants and trees.

Stanley was retired from Westside Trucking, Inc. where he worked as General Manager.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Stan?s memory to the Stanley E. Potter Memorial Fund, % of Bankers Trust, 221 3rd Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52406. All donations will be contributed to the Marion Historical Society for improvements to the community where Stanley spent his life.
