Shirley A. Yates, 73, of Willow Gardens Care Center, died Thursday, January 22, 2009, at the care center, following a long illness. Services: 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 25, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where the family will greet friends from noon until service time. Chaplain Christine Wagner-Hecht will officiate.
Survivors include her children, Michelle Blankenship, Melinda Yates and fiance Joel Schmidt, all of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Susan Yates, Bianca and Jennifer Smallwood; two great-grandchildren, Schala Vera and Raenique Shockley; one brother, Albon Blankenship of Hawthorne, Florida; five sisters, Ethel (Don) Minnick of Falls Church, Virginia, Ruth (Bill) Rhoades of Parsons, West Virginia, Georgina (Bob) Clagg of Seaford, Delaware, Jean Sabol of Willoughby, Ohio, and Charlene (Jim) Mustian of Cartersville, Virginia; and a sister-in-law, Sherri Blankenship of Friendship, Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, James; son, Allen; brother, Walter “Buddy” Blankenship; sister, Freida Barber; and her dog, Teilah..
Shirley was born October 4, 1935, the daughter of Jess and LouAnna (Green) Blankenship, in Mullens, West Virginia. She was a homemaker.
