Shirley A. Strauel, 50, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, December 14, 2007, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, from complications of ALS (Lou Gehrigs). Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Tom McDermott. The family will greet friends from 3 to 8 p.m. on Monday, December 17, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a vigil service will begin at 6:00 p.m. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include two sons, Seth (Melissa) of Independence and Scott (Kim) of Robins; a daughter, Sara of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Brendon and Landon; her mother, Grace Putz of Manchester; two sisters, Barbara Fannon of Coralville and Susie Stallman of Robins; three brothers, Ron Putz, Steve Putz, both of Strawberry Point and Tom Putz of Swisher; her nieces and nephews; and friend Al Neff.
She was preceded in death by her father, Frederick Putz; a sister, Mary Ann Putz; her maternal grandparents, Alton and Elma Lueck; her paternal grandparents, Anthony and Marcella Putz; and a niece, Kayla Rae Putz.
Shirley was born and raised on a dairy farm near Strawberry Point, Iowa, on October 5, 1957, the daughter of Fred and Grace (Lueck) Putz. A graduate from Starmont High School and Kirkwood College, Shirley worked at the Union Bank & Trust in Strawberry Point, Bank Iowa in Independence and GE Capital in Cedar Rapids. She enjoyed volunteering, going to her children’s sport activities and her passion for ballroom and country dancing. Shirley also enjoyed the annual trips to Gays Mills & Pikes Peak. She helped with the Jerry Lewis Telethon raising money and appeared on Channel 2 as one of their feature stories.
The family would like to thank Father Tom McDermott, the parish of St. Ludmila Church, and Oldorf Hospice House staff and volunteers for their support and loving care given to Shirley. Also a special thanks to Dr. Shivapore, Neurologist (her partner of strength) and staff at the University of Iowa Hospital, to all of her family, friends, and dancing friends for their help and support. Thanks to Vince, Kevin, Jason and Stacy from JVA Mobility for the equipment, support and wonderful service and thank you Cedar Rapids MDA.
