Shirley A. Smith, 70, of Marion, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa. Parish Vigil Service: 4:00 p.m., Thursday, March 3, 2016, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 4, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, conducted by Father David O’Connor. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Doug; two sons, Creighton (Wynn Nguyen) Smith of Cedar Rapids and Matthew Smith of Marion; grandson, Cole Smith; brother, Keith (Marian) McClellan of Oak Park, Michigan; sister, Martha Introna of Staten Island, New York; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Kathleen Lewis.

Shirley was born December 22, 1945, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Kenneth and Alice (Arford) McClellan. She graduated from Tipton High School in 1964. She continued her education for four years at University of Northern Iowa, graduating in 1968. On April 11, 1970, Shirley married Doug Smith at the Immaculate Conception Church in Cedar Rapids. She worked at St. Luke’s Adolescent Center for over 18 years. Shirley was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels and being the head volunteer for elections. Shirley enjoyed golfing, card club, book club as she was an avid reader, and playing board games. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandson, Cole.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church Food Bank at 802 12th Street, Marion, Iowa, 52302 or the Mission of Hope Food Pantry at 1537 1st Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 52403.
