Shirley Floy Musselman, of Marion, died Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at Summit Pointe. Shirley was born in Genoa, Nebraska, to Wesley M. Winell and Florence (Gillespie) Winell on August 23, 1925. She attended Genoa Public School for 12 years, graduating in May 1942. Her first job was at the Genoa National Bank. She then moved to Omaha, Nebraska, and attended Van Sant School of Business. She then worked for National Life and Accident Insurance Company in Omaha.
Shirley’s high school sweetheart, Calvin Musselman, returned from North Africa where he was stationed for the U.S. Navy. He was stationed at a naval school in Chicago as an aircraft mechanics instructor. The couple was married on November 27, 1944, and Shirley moved to Chicago. After the Naval enlistment was served, they moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where Calvin attended a school and Shirley worked as a secretary. A job took the couple to Waterloo, Iowa, for employment at KXEL radio station. This job took them to Waterloo, Dysart, and La Port City, Iowa, and the family increased to four with the birth of two sons, Thomas and Edward.
A change of employment moved the family to Marion, Iowa. Shirley was hired as a secretary for Rockwell-Collins and worked until her retirement in 1976.
Shirley was a stay-at-home mother while her sons were young. She was active in their church and school activities. She was a den mother when they were Cub Scouts. Mom and Dad attended sports they participated in.
After Shirley’s retirement from Collins, she enjoyed traveling, was an avid reader, and she always enjoyed music and played piano as a young girl and later a small electronic organ. She played clarinet in the high school band and Genoa city band. Shirley liked solving crossword puzzles. She doted on being Grandma to her three granddaughters and was proud of their accomplishments. She was a devoted wife and mother.
Survivors are her two sons, Thomas (Linda) of Skillman, New Jersey and Edward (Cindy) of Mechanicsville, Iowa; three granddaughters, Teresa Kavanagh (Tim) of Anchorage, Alaska; Carrie Musselman of Robins, Iowa; and Amy Musselman of Skillman, New Jersey.
Preceding her in death are husband, Calvin; her parents; a sister Barbara; and a brother, Robert.
A memorial service conducted by Reverend Dr. Nancy Redman will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion, Iowa. Inurnment will be at Valley View Cemetery, Genoa, Nebraska at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley’s memory to the First Presbyterian Church, 802 12th Street, Marion, Iowa, 52302.
