Shirley May Johnson (Vicka)

Shirley May (Mrvicka) Johnson, 73, of 2458 Lauren Drive S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, in Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, following a long illness. Services: 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 9, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Chaplain Joe Kane. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, June 8, 2008, and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home. Inurnment: Czech National Cemetery Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her husband, George; daughters, Terri Lynn (Brian) McGraw of Muscoda, Wisconsin and LeaAnn (Doug) Ross of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. She was “Babi” to her grandchildren, Maddie and Carly Ross. Also surviving are her sister, Millie (Bob) Mitchell of Cedar Rapids and their children; sister-in-law, Evelyn Mrkvicka and children of Cedar Rapids; many Caribbean friends from Anguilla; many local friends; and was a good and faithful friend of Bill W.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Lodge Mrkvicka.
Shirley was born May 22, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Marak) Mrkvicka. On October 26, 1957, she was united in marriage to George Johnson at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. She was a homemaker and cleaned houses.
Shirley was past chairman of El Kahir Shrine Auxiliary, member of the VFW Auxiliary and the WFLA and former member of CSA. Until her illness, Shirley went with her husband to transport children to the Shriner’s Hospital. She loved to golf, crochet, work in her flower garden, bird watch and being outdoors. She loved angels, the Jazz Festival and time on the beach in Anquilla. She was a good friend and companion to people wherever she went.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Cowden and Katie for the compassionate care they gave Shirley.
