Sharon Lorene Landis, 80, of Marion, peacefully passed away at home surrounded by her family, after a lengthy and hard fought battle with cancer. Sharon was born November 19, 1934, to Gerald and Audrey Wilson in Osceola, Iowa. Living the life of a carpenter’s daughter, her family went west to Los Angeles, California, and Ogden, Utah before returning to Iowa and settling in Marion. She attended school in Marion, and graduated from Marion High School with the class of 52’. Upon graduating, she worked for the phone company and had the honor of being the head night operator in Marion, one of the last “number please” switch board operators. She attended Marion Christian Church where she met and fell in love with her husband, Ronald Laverne Landis at a church picnic in 1958. They were united in marriage on January 17, 1959, at Marion Christian Church. She and Ron raised their family in Marion where they shared their love in marriage for 56 years. Not only was Sharon a wonderful wife to Ron, but also a mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, great-grandmother and thoughtful and faithful friend to all she met along her journey in life. Her joys in life were her Church and the Congregation at Marion Christian, the many cruises that she and Ron traveled on, and most of all, taking care of her family, home and her “extended family,” her beloved cats. Their kindred spirits brought her much peace and joy as a continuation of her many “feline friends” as a child. Her peaceful and compassionate demeanor when meeting or seeing someone, no matter what the circumstances, was an immediate attraction to anyone’s life she touched along the way. She is survived by her husband Ronald; her children, Dawn Wheeler, Hiawatha, Iowa, Laurie (Hollie) Jenkins, Ft. Atkinson, WI, Roger (Gloria) Landis, Marion, Iowa; Grandchildren, Aaron Wheeler, Matt Wheeler, Jordan (Lauren) Alex, Katie (Chris) Muckleroy, Joey (Veronica) Suitonu and Kyle Landis; her great-grandchildren, Kyler, Tyler, Madison, and Joey Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Jeananne; and honorary in-laws, Chuck & DeVee Warner. Per her wishes, she will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held at the Marion Christian Church 1:30 p.m., Sunday, July 26, 2015.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. Nabi at the Hall Perrine Cancer Center, Hospice of Mercy, especially to Jenny, Cindy and Joleen for the compassionate care they provided. She will be interred at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion at a later date.

Per Sharon’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cedar Valley Humane Society or to the Hall Perrine Cancer Center.
