Sandra Kay Franklin, 39, of Hiawatha, formerly of Alburnett, died Thursday, November 22, 2007, in her home surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with melanoma. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2007 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Hiawatha by Father Neil Manternach. The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 25, 2007 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, where a vigil service will begin at 5:30 p.m. Burial: Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City.
Survivors include her parents, Harlan & Janet Franklin of Central City; five brothers, Larry (Pam) Franklin of Springville, Dennis (Sherry) Franklin of Terrell, Texas, Ed (Diane) Franklin of Cedar Rapids, Jim (Deb) Franklin of Central City, and Ben (Stacy) Franklin of Alburnett; three sisters, Diane (Brian) Hudachek of Lone Tree, Wanda Franklin of Hiawatha, and Patty (Brett) Shulista of Alburnett; 15 nephews; 8 nieces; 1 great-nephew; and 4 great-nieces.
Sandy was born on June 4, 1968 in Cedar Rapids to Harlan V. and Janet A. (Minehart) Franklin. She graduated from Alburnett High School in 1986, received her A.A. in Acccounting from Kirkwood Community College in 1988, and later received her B.A. from Mt. Mercy College. Sandy worked for the past 12 years at AEGON in Cedar Rapids, most recently as a Financial Administrative Analyst in the Corporate Accounting Department.
Sandy was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, great aunt, godmother, and friend with a genuine concern for others. She loved to travel, especially taking vacations to the beach. Sandy loved family gatherings and attending her nieces’ and nephews’ activities. She enjoyed watching the Denver Broncos, Iowa Hawkeye football games, and attending country music concerts. Sandy was gentle, accepting, fun-loving, caring and loyal. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A memorial fund is being established in Sandy’s memory.
