Sandra Lou “Sandy” (Bauer) Kongable, 79, of Center Point, Iowa, formerly of Winfield, Iowa, passed away Saturday, December 5, 2015 at her son’s home in Center Point. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 10, 2015, at the Center Point United Methodist Church, Center Point with Rev. Mike Ellson officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at the Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point. Additional visitation will be held on Friday, December 11, 2015, from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the Honts Funeral Home, Winfield. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 12, 2015, at the Honts Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Winfield Scott Township Cemetery, Winfield, Iowa.
Sandy was born March 6, 1936, in Columbus Junction, IA, the daughter of Eldin C. Bauer and (Cornelia) Nina Wagner Bauer, and was raised in West Chester, Iowa. She attended West Chester Consolidated Schools graduating in 1954. She graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College with a BA in Education, with additional work at the University of Iowa, NIU, and Marycrest College. She was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at IWC. She earned her Master’s Degree at the age of 48 from Northeast Missouri State University, where she graduated with Honors.
Sandy married Sheldon V. Kongable in August of 1956. Together they had four children – Cynthia, Greg, Stefanie, and Scott. Sandy was an elementary school teacher for 31 ½ years, teaching fifth and sixth grade science the last twenty-five years at Columbus Junction. She retired in 1994 and substituted for five years after her retirement.
Sheldon and Sandy were both licensed pilots and were members of the IA/MO Chapter of International Flying Farmers and Associated Pilots of Iowa. She served as Chapter Queen of the IA/MO Chapter three times and was Newsletter Editor for 22 years. She also served as IFF Region 6 Director for two years. Sandy was a member of Iowa Wesleyan College Advisory Committee to the Department of Education for five years and Chairperson for one year. In 1969, she was named the first Farm Wife of the month for Farm Wife News Magazine.
Other service related memberships include: the Iowa Reading Council; Junior Women’s Club where she served as President; Henry County Federation of Women’s Clubs/IFWC/GFWC where she served as District and State Chairman for the Department of Home Life of IFWC and County Chairman of GFWC; NEA/ISEA/GEA/CEA/ISEA-PAC where she served as auditor and chairperson of governmental affairs to GEA, President of CEA, and delegate to ISEA Assembly; Conservation Education; Henry County Parks in Peril; and Resource Conservation and Development Committee where she served as Chairman.
Sandy was very active in Iowa Retired School Personnel, serving as Henry County Co-Chair and State Legislative Chair. She served two, three-year terms with the Iowa Professional Teaching Practice Commission. Sandy was a United Presbyterian Church-Associate, a member of the United Presbyterian Women, and sang in the choir. She was youth leader for ten years and a Sunday school teacher for seven years.
Sandy was an active Republican Party worker for over 65 years, starting in college as a Young Republican. She was a member of the Henry County Republican Women for 55 years, serving as President for four years. She also served as a Delegate to County, District and State conventions for over 48 years. In 1980, she was a Delegate to the National GOP Convention later attended the 1981 Inauguration and Ball. Sandy served on Senator Jepsen’s First District Academy Selection Committee for 5 years.
Some of Sandy’s other interests included Garden Club, Quilt Club, craftwork such as ribbon crochet and blooming candles, and reading.
Sandy co-owned of the Winfield Fitness Center with fifteen other co-owners, saying, “It was going to close, so I just bought it.”
Sandy is survived by her two brothers, Charles Bauer and Thomas Bauer; her daughter, Stefanie (Mark) Skroch of Surprise, Arizona; son, Scott (Jennifer) Kongable of Center Point, Iowa and four grandchildren, Megan, Natalie, Zachary and Nicholas Kongable. She was preceded in death by husband Sheldon in 2014; a daughter, Cynthia Annette; a son, Greg Lee; her mother, Nina; her father, Eldin; and step-mother, Frances.
