Sam L. Bailey Sr., 78, of 1165 4th St., died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at his home. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004, at the First Baptist Church in Marion by Rev. Randy Bobzien. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Flora; his children, Don (Jill) Bailey of St. Louis, Missouri, Sam (Marilyn) Bailey Jr. of Marion, Brenda (Terry) Tuttrup of Waseca, Minnesota, Rodger (Julia) Bailey of Loveland, Colorado, Carol (Doug) Donahue of Loveland, Colorado, Linda Boone (Rich Konen) of Des Moines; a special niece, Sharon (Jack) McLaughlin of Swisher; a sister, Anne (Robert) Nixon of Detroit, Michigan; twelve grandchildren, Matt Tuttrup, Andy Bailey, Meg Lucero, Zach Bailey, Carlee Tumilty, Ben Bailey, Cassie Boone, Rebecca Donahue, Emily Donahue, Calvin Bailey, Trevor Donahue and Taylor Bailey; and five great-grandchildren, Brenna Tuttrup, Brandon Tuttrup, Madilyn Tumilty, Mackenzie Tumilty and Charlie Lucero.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ezra Bailey; and a sister, Ella Hugh.
Sam was born October 5, 1925, the son of Pinkney Beauregard "Bud? and Mamie (Brown) Bailey in Epworth, Georgia. On February 4, 1945, he married Flora A. VonAhsen in Williamsburg, Iowa. He served with the U.S. Navy during WWII. Sam was a lifelong carpenter and also worked at Kirkwood Community College. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Marion, the Metal Detecting Club, American Legion Post No. 298, Carpenters Local Union No. 308 and a member of the Masons.
Sam enjoyed his life to the fullest - he loved his family and his friends. Everyone he met was a "dandy? person. He loved going to Georgia every winter to re-connect and spend time with his family and friends. His last words to his family were, "How can I die when I have so much to love?.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Sam?s memory.
