Ruth E. (Hanson) Phelps, 87, a resident of Mercy Hallmar, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Thursday, June 19, 2008, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a lengthy illness. Services: 1:30 p.m., Monday, June 23, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Clinton Jeffers. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m., Sunday, June 22, 2008, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her daughter, Ann (Dale) Wendt of Cedar Rapids; son, Lloyd (Sandra) Phelps, Jr. of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Tom (Tina) Wendt, Tim (Chris) Wendt, Dustin (Casey) Wendt, Dodie (Mike) Tedesco, Tammy (Kelly) Johnson, Cindy (Doug) Werning, Christy (Randy) Fox and Teresa (Mike) Werning; 24 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois Hanson of Cedar Rapids; many nieces and nephews; best friend and caregiver, Pam McGrane of Cedar Rapids; and her constant companion her sheltie, Sam.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd; sister, DeElda Andrews; and two brothers, Marvin and Edwin Hanson.
Ruth was born December 7, 1920, in Covington, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Edith (Rawson) Hanson. On October 6, 1937, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Phelps in the Little Brown Church. Lloyd died June 7, 1992.
Ruth was a longtime member of T.O.P.S. and headed the commodity give away at the Covington church where she was a life long member. She enjoyed taking care of her cats and her dog, Sam. Ruth loved a good joke and playing pranks on people. Some of her other joys were gardening, bird watching and crocheting.
