Ruth Kate Akers, “Omi”, 82, of 1602 Denali Dr., Marion, died Friday, January 30, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, following a lengthy illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at New Apostolic Church on Wilson Ave., Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Larry Dollmeyer. The family will greet friends from 3 - 7, Monday, February 2, 2009 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Private family inurnment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
Survivors include her children, Ray (Sandi) Wasek of Cedar Rapids, Barb (Steve) Swanson of Marion, Ron (Sherry) Wasek of Charlotte, North Carolina, Terry Wasek of Columbus, Ohio, and Jason (Jennifer) Wasek of Marion; a son-in-law, Arden Kasner of Marion; grandchildren, Shane, Travis, Tarek, Amy, Matt, Zak, Zane, Ben, Emily, Jacob, Madeleine, Lillian, Noah, and Elaina; and 10 great-grandchildren. Also, her dear neighbor and friend, Faye Remington.
She was preceded in death by 5 children, Ingrid, Storm, Raimund, Blanca, and Jayme; her parents; and 8 brothers and sisters.
Ruth was born June 24, 1926, the daughter of Johann and Amalie (Wittek) Wallesch, in Wattenscheid, Germany. She married Sykstus Wasek. He died in 1969. She later married John Akers. He died in 1993. Ruth was an avid seamstress and excellent cook. She enjoyed playing bingo and gardening. Her greatest accomplishment was her family who she loved and took care of lovingly.
