Ruth M. Helmrichs, 87, of Manchester, Iowa, died Sunday, June 22, 2008, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, due to Alzheimer’s disease.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at First Lutheran Church in Manchester, Iowa, with Rev. Harlan Kaden officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester, and one hour before services Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Ryan.
Ruth was born June 14, 1921 near Manchester, Iowa, the daughter of Alva and Mildred Claire (Jencks) Downs. She was educated at the McGee School in Delaware County. Ruth was a housekeeper and nanny for the Brown family owners of the Brown Funeral Home in Manchester. On June 4, 1945, Ruth was united in marriage to Bertus Helmrichs at the Ryan Lutheran Parsonage. The couple lived in Cedar Rapids for a short time before moving to the Helmrichs’ family farm south of Manchester. They retired in 1978 and moved into Manchester.
Ruth was a member of First Lutheran Church in Manchester. She enjoyed needlepoint and playing cards. Ruth is remembered for her baking, especially her awesome pies and for being a very giving person…helping others endlessly. The couple enjoyed wintering in the south.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 63 years, Bertus Helmrichs of Manchester, her daughter & husband and their children, Verla & David Tegeler of Manchester, Stephanie of Cedar Rapids, Timothy of Cedar Falls and Jonathan Tegeler at home; and one brother-& sister-in-law, Marvin & Doris Helmrichs of Manchester.
Ruth was preceded in death her parents, Alva & Mildred Downs; a son, Arlyn Helmrichs; her twin brother, Russell Downs; and infant twin brothers, Roger and Rodney Downs.
