Russell J. Levins, 81, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away at his home under hospice care on Tuesday, May 3, 2022. A memorial service with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. A livestream of the funeral service may be accessed on the funeral home website tribute page for Russ, under “photos and videos,” starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2022. A luncheon will immediately follow the service at The Legacy Center at Murdoch-Linwood. Private family entombment will take place at Linwood Cemetery Mausoleum in Cedar Rapids.
Russ was born October 29, 1940, in West Burlington, Iowa, the son of Alvin Patrick and Emily Mary (French) Levins. He was one of sixteen children. After high school graduation, Russ served in the United States Navy. Russ was united in marriage to Mary Perry on April 20, 1963. They were later divorced. He was later united in marriage to Colleen (Ealy) Barnes on April 20, 1991, at the Longbranch in Cedar Rapids. Russ was a union pipefitter for Burlington Local 125 and a member of the Moose Lodge. After his retirement, Russ enjoyed driving a bus for the Cedar Rapids School District. He enjoyed cooking on the grill, golfing, fishing, camping, and feeding the birds he watched in his yard. Russ loved his dogs and his family very much. He will be missed.
Russ is survived by his three children, Matt (Jennifer) Levins of West Burlington, Jane (Dave) Williams of Burlington, and Julie Levins of Peoria, Illinois; step-children, Kris, Wayne, Tim, Shelly (Rob), Kelly and Tabby; twenty one grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brothers, John Levins and LeRoy Levins, both of Burlington, Mark Levins of Quincy, Illinois, and Mike Levins of West Burlington; sisters, Rosemary Loper of West Burlington, Paulette Nichols of Burlington, and Betty Frey of Decatur, Illinois.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Colleen Levins on March 5, 2022; brothers, Patrick, Artie, and Donald Levins and Baby Boy Levins, a brother in infancy; sisters, Norma Raschendorfer, Carol Phillips, Marilyn Weingart, and Helen Rankin; and beloved pets, Pandy, Maggie, and Oscar.
