Russell D. Ferguson, 87, of Solon, died Sunday, June 8, 2008, at the Solon Nursing Care Center, following a brief illness. Services: 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where the family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time. Rev. Renee Lunemann will officiate. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.
Survivors include his wife, Jewell; his children, Janet Evans of Cedar Rapids, Carol Ferguson of Denver, Colorado and Mike (Diane) Ferguson of Solon; six grandchildren, Crassie Evans, Mark (Jenna) Ferguson, Paul Evans, Ekem Evans, Olivia Ferguson and Dalton Ferguson; a great-grandson, Paul Martin Evans; and five nieces, Aljean, Eloysie, Sandra, Sheila and Sharon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and four brothers.
Russell was born May 14, 1921, the son of Everett and Belle (Higgins) Ferguson, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. While at McKinley High School, he set a 1940 record for the 440 low hurdles at the Drake Relays and held several other state and city records. Russell served his country with the United States Army during World War II. On May 15, 1947, he was united in marriage to Jewell Jobe in Cedar Rapids. For over 35 years, Russell worked for Wilson & Company.
An avid sports fan all of his life, he was a championship bowler and traveled to tournaments all over the United States. Russell loved to travel which included traveling to Nigeria, West Africa, visiting his daughter Janet and her family. His favorite vacation spot was Montego Bay, Jamaica. He also enjoyed fishing, bow hunting, tropical fish, horticulture, electronics and auto repair. Russell was a wonderful and devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed.
