Russell E. Downs, 83, of Delhi, died at his home on November 10, 2004 following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 13, 2004 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester by Rev. Harlan Kaden. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Friday and one hour before services Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Delhi.
Russell was born south of Manchester on June 14, 1921 the son of Alva and Mildred (Jenks) Downs. He attended the McGee School in Delaware County. Russell farmed near Delhi and also worked for Stone?s Hardware Store in Delhi and as a greens keeper for the Manchester Country Club.
Russell loved cats and had a few he fed and nurtured every day. Russell enjoyed having coffee with his friends at the café. He was a simple man who lived a simple lifestyle. Russell helped his parents work the farm with their two horses, Judy and Jenny. He never owned a tractor. He carried milk from the two or three cows they milked into the house and used the separator. Russell loved Ruth?s potato salad, which she generously made every week or two.
Russell is survived by his twin sister, Ruth (Bertus) Helmrichs of Manchester; and a niece, Verla (David) Tegeler of Manchester.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alva & Mildred Downs; and twin infant brothers, Roger and Ronald.
