Rozelle Mae Spear, 94, of 4121 16th Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids died Sunday, April 6, 2008, at the Meth-Wick Community following a short illness. Services: 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2008 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. James Blair of Blessed Hope Church, Vinton. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at the funeral home. Burial: Agency Cemetery, Agency, Iowa.

Survivors include her children, Craig Spear of San Francisco, California, Janet (Glenn) Roemig of Shellsburg, Iowa, Jack Spear of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mark Spear of Cayucos, California: two grandchildren, Emily Roemig of Newhall and Whitney Roemig of Shellsburg; and a great-granddaughter, Aubrey Rozelle Petersen of Newhall.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Ivyl.

Rozelle was born February 26, 1914, the daughter of Earl and Elsie (Ferneau) Fahrney, in Scott County, Iowa, and grew-up in Deep River.

A talented athlete and basketball player, Rozelle’s Deep River High school team competed in the Iowa High School Girls State Tournament of 1932.

A 1940 graduate from Coe College, she was united in marriage to Ivyl Spear in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 21, 1944.

From 1931 to 1944 Rozelle taught middle and high school classes in Agency, Stanhope, Belle Plaine and Harrison and Roosevelt schools in Cedar Rapids.

Rozelle and her husband opened and managed the Ivyl Spear Restaurant on Highway 30 West from 1953 to 1966.

Rozelle was a member of the Eastern Star Cedar Chapter #184, Iowa Retired School Personnel Association, Ambar Grotto Auxiliary, St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary, and Christ Church Presbyterian.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Meth-Wick Community and Evergreen Estates staff and to Amber, Jessie and Marilyn of St. Luke’s Hospice for their loving care and support.
