Rose E. Tompkins, 96, a resident of Village Place in Marion, died Wednesday, October 16, 2002, at Village Place, following a short illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 21, 2002, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Randy Bobzien. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, October 25, 2002, at Campbell Methodist Church in Campbell New York. Inurnment: Fairview Cemetery, Painted Post, New York.

Survivors include her daughter, Jacqueline Taylor of Marion; her son, Kenneth Tompkins and wife Nancy of Absecon, New Jersey; her grandchildren, Lynn Smith and wife Tami of Port Ludlow, Washington, Tracy Halstead and husband Roger of Cedar Rapids, Ben Tompkins of Absecon, New Jersey, Magdalena Maher and husband Michael of West Branch, Hilary Tompkins-Pringle and husband Michael of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Raphael Tompkins of Florida, Sandy Brown and husband Richard of Cedar Rapids and Gregory Taylor and wife Karen of Yulee, Florida; eleven great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Lawrence.

Rose was born July 22, 1906, the daughter of Alson and Sarah (Randall) Card in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. On December 19, 1925, she married Lawrence "Tommy? Tompkins. Rose and Lawrence were long-time residents of New York state and moved to Marion 13 years ago. He died in July of 1993. Rose was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Campbell Methodist Church in Campbell, New York.

Rose will certainly be remembered for her unstinting generosity. She loved to create craft projects which she gave to friends and family. Most of all, she loved to knit and all of us have numerous sweaters and afghans that prove her superb knitting skills. For many years she gave each of her numerous grandchildren a precious, handmade Christmas ornament.
