Roland James “Rollie” Mills, 66 of Marion, formerly of Mason City, passed away Sunday July 12, 2015. Memorial Service: 300 p.m. Friday July 17, 2015 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post # 298. Visitation: 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday July 16, 2015 at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy; his children, Marcey (Mark) Liebe of Troy Mills, Michael Mills, Danny Mills and Allison Mills of Cedar Rapids, his grandchildren, Tristen, Taron, Traxton, and Teagan; and his siblings, Jeff Mills of Cedar Rapids, Paul (Brenda) Mills of Mason City, Russ Mills of Mason City, Randy (Minessa) Wiltse of Charles City, Roxanne (Mark) Patton of Dubuque, and Nancy (Lynn) Huber of Rockwell.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his ex-wife, Phyllis Mills; and his brother Dan Mills.
Rollie was born July 19, 1948 to James H. and Shirley “Midge” (Boyle) Mills in Mason City, Iowa. He graduated from Newman High School in Mason City. Rollie married Sandra Hemmer July 31, 1987 at Unity Center in Cedar Rapids.
Rollie proudly served in the United States Army’s 190th Assault Helicopter Company as a crew chief during the Vietnam War where he received the Army Commendation Medal for heroism and the Distinguished Flying Cross, among other awards.
Rollie was a retired master-millwright and proud member of Local Union 2158. He served as a member of the executive committee, owned his own business, and helped construct many of today’s industrial plants. He was also an avid lifelong golfer and outdoorsman who enjoyed sharing his passions with those he loved.
Rollie loved his family deeply, lived his life with integrity, and was respected by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by those who were lucky enough to know him.
