Roger John Helle, 75, of Hopkinton died April 27, 2010 at the Jones Regional Medical Center in Anamosa, Iowa following a sudden illness.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 1, 2010 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Hopkinton, Iowa by Rev. John Kremer. Family will greet friends from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., Friday, April 30 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa, where there will be a 4:00 p.m. Rosary Service and a 7:30 p.m. Scripture Service. Family will also greet friends one hour before services Saturday at the church. Burial will be at the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Manchester.

Roger was born January 10, 1935 in Peosta, the son of John and Clara (Herting) Helle. He attended school in Buchanan and Delaware County, and later attended Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. On October 10, 1953, he was united in marriage to Mary Anna Malone at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lamont, Iowa. The couple moved to Cedar Rapids, where Roger was a Sales Supervisor for Trausch Bakery. He also obtained his NASD license and sold for the Prudential Insurance Company and was a Blue Cross/Blue Shield sales representative. Moving to Manchester, he purchased the Sinclair Tank Wagon Service. In 1974, Roger and Mary moved to Hopkinton and purchased the Delaware County Leader Newspaper in Hopkinton, where Roger was publisher/owner and sports writer.

In 2009, Roger received the 5-Star Award from the Maquoketa Valley Community Schools for his service in publicizing school and athletic events. He loved to cover Maquoketa Valley sporting events, gardening, golfing, fishing and softball. His highlight was attending his children and grandchildren’s events.

Roger is survived by his wife, Mary Helle of Hopkinton; four children, Steven (Susan) Helle of Fisher, IL, Bruce (Gail) Helle of Manchester, Angela Glaw of Cedar Rapids, and Susan (Bill) Sevart of Manchester; nine grandchildren; one brother, Earl (Alma) Helle of Cedar Rapids; and a sister-in-law, Vera Helle of Winthrop.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, John and Clara Helle; and one brother, LaVerne Helle.
