Robert L. Whittlesey, 67, of Marion, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center, following a sudden illness. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2003, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion where a parish vigil service will begin at 5 p.m. followed by Knights of Columbus Rosary service. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids with military rites by American Legion Post No. 298 of Marion.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Mary; his daughter, Dr. Karen (Dr. Roger) Landers of Salem, Oregon; three sons, Stephen (Cheryl) Whittlesey of Mt. Vernon, Master Sergeant John (Michelle) Whittlesey of Papillion, Nebraska and Michael (Jane) Whittlesey of La Porte City; three granddaughters, Jill, Ariel and Caitlan; and a brother, Cyrus Whittlesey of Garland, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jackson.

Bob was born June 21, 1935, in Traer, Iowa, the son of Cyrus Edward and Gladys Vera (Jackson) Whittlesey. Bob grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa and entered the United States Air Force in 1952. On February 4, 1956, he married Mary L. Siebert at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Topeka, Kansas. He served his country in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star and three Air Force Medals of Commendation. Bob retired from the Air Force in 1974. He then worked in many capacities for the Quaker Oats Company in Cedar Rapids, from General Supervisor to Manager of Health and Safety before retiring in 1996.

Bob was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion and was active in two choirs. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 5390 in Marion.
