Robert Tomash, 85, of Swisher, Iowa, died Monday, October 26, 2015, at home. Family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m. Friday, October 30, 2015, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, and 9-10 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church, Cedar Rapids. Service: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 31, 2015, at the church, conducted by Rev. Jay Jentink. Burial: Shueyville Cemetery Shueyville, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Janice of Swisher; son, David (Lisa) Tomash of Iowa City, Iowa, and their children, Mikala (Andrew) Coltrane, Austin Tomash and Jesse Tomash; daughter, Deanne (Tim) Phillips of Boston, Georgia, and their children, Bethany (Rick) McDonnell, Paul (Jessica) Phillips, Micah (Ashley) Phillips and Hannah Phillips; son, Doug (Melanie) Tomash of Swisher, Iowa, and their children, Sarah (Jake) Kaiser and Daniel Tomash; three great-grandchildren, Tristan and Bella Ruth Coltrane and Ronan McDonnell; three sisters, Dorothy Dostal and Darlene Plattenberger, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Janet Cerveny of Fairfax, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Joyce Hotz of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Elmer Tomash; and great-grandchild, Jonah Coltrane.
Robert was born on January 10, 1930, in Rural Oxford, Iowa, son of Joseph and Emma (Netolicky) Tomash. He worked at Johnson Gas Company and later for Evergreen Packaging. During the Korean War he served in the United States Army. In 1952, he married Janice Hotz at the Federated Church in Lisbon, Iowa. Robert enjoyed fishing, hunting, going to tractor pulls, gardening and garage sales. He was a handyman who loved construction projects. Robert built the houses the couple lived in and also enjoyed restoring garden tractors. Most of all he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
