Robert Edward Salasek, died Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at his home in Mountain Home, Arkansas. Time of Gathering: 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, November 1, 2014, in the Legacy Center at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. The Cedar Rapids Fire Department Honor Guard will provide a silent guard during the time of gathering. Military honors by American Legion Post 727. Inurnment: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 1, Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Robert was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, August 18, 1927, to Joe and Mary Salasek. On May 16, 1948, he married the love of his life, Bonnie Nelson. Robert was a man who was forever busy. In addition to his career as a fire fighter, his life encompassed being a veteran of the Navy, a butcher and a farmer. Even after his retirement from active service as a fireman, he continued to pursue many activities, including mowing neighbors’ lawns, golfing and fishing. Robert was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion and a life-member of the VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie of Mountain Home; three daughters, Janet Salasek of Brooklyn, Iowa, Kathryn (James) Holloway of West Plains, Missouri, and Laurie (Brent) Miller of Gainsville, Missouri; 13 grandchildren, Jennifer (Bob) Clemens, Jason Kindig, Brian (Gina) Kindig, Cheryl Rosenburg, Wende (Juan) Ochoa, Sonya (Chris) Ready, Heather (Ed) Hanratty, Kyle Holloway, Melissa (Robert) Rogers, Mindy (Billy) Pippin, Michelle (Luke) Cooley, Marsha (Chance) Snell and Jacob Miller; 18 great-grandchildren; and his special “family” Charles and Mary Rozek and their children, Stacy and Michael and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Gladys Ross Wilson; and two grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund.
