Robert L. Rucker, 79, of 113 Barbara Street S.W., died Tuesday evening, January 31, 2006, in Heritage Nursing & Rehab Center, Cedar Rapids, following a long illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 3, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Jay Jentink. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today (Thursday) at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; a son, John (Judy) Rucker of Camdenton, Missouri; three grandchildren, Rob Rucker of Beaverton, Oregon, Traci (Brian) Freeberg of Cedar Rapids and Stacy (Jim) Fleming of Camdenton, Missouri; three great-grandchildren, Cody Freeberg, Jenna Freeberg and Delacy Shoemaker; a brother, Jack (Shirley) Rucker of Prescott Valley, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews including, Jeanne (Bill) Ritter of Danville, Illinois, Cindy (Paul) Newnum of Prescott Valley, Arizona, and Dru (Mitch) Diedrich of Farmington Hills, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Arthur Rucker, Jr.; and a sister, Mildred Diedrich.

He was born June 26, 1926, in Danville, Illinois, the son of Arthur L. and Marie Ellen Bernard Rucker. On June 30, 1952, in Danville, Illinois, he was united in marriage to Margaret Foehrer. He graduated from Northwest Nampa Idaho University and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He taught 6th grade in Kansas for two years. For thirty-three years, he worked for the Iowa Department for the Blind, where he served as a counselor and district supervisor.

Robert was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids, and was an active Sunday school teacher. He was a past member of Evening Lions Club, holding all offices After retiring he played piano, volunteered at several nursing homes and was an avid mall walker. Robert loved his family, his job and was a people person. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother and will be greatly missed.
