Robert W. Palmer, 75, of 250 Cimarron Drive, Hiawatha, died Friday, June 17, 2005, at St. Luke?s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Susan Detwiler. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 Monday, June 20, 2005, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Gladys; his children, Janie (John) Oren, of Gulfport, Mississippi, Debbie (Rob) Distante, of Ontario, California, Sheryl Glew, James (Debra) Palmer and Cindy Palmer, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Staci, David, Stephanie, Angela, John, Shane, Chase and Matthew; and one great-grandson, Brandon.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Robert was born September 9, 1929, the son of John and Fern (Kephart) Palmer in Oelwein, Iowa. A 1946 graduate of Independence High School, he enlisted in the Air Force, where he took his basic training at San Antonio, Texas. Robert served at the Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland and Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska, before he was discharged in August of 1949. Robert attended Upper Iowa University and worked at Iowa Farm Products in the fall of 1950 until 1963. On May 1, 1956, he was united in marriage to Gladys Doty. A carpenter for 33 years, Robert worked for Wingardner Construction until July of 1964 and then worked for Shepard Construction until he semi-retired in 1992. He then worked part-time until 1996.
Instead of flowers, a memorial fund has been established or memorials may be directed to a charity of donor?s choice or to the American Cancer Society in memory of Robert.
