Robert James Lyness

Robert J. Lyness, 79, of Ryan, Iowa, died Monday morning, June 9, 2003, at Regional Medical Center in Manchester, Iowa, following a short illness.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2003 at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church, Ryan, Iowa with the Rev. Ralph Simington officiating. Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 11, at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa, where a Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. Family will also greet friends from 9:30 to 10:30 Thursday morning at the church. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ryan, Iowa.
Robert was born April 14, 1924, on the family farm near Ryan, Iowa. He was the son of Arthur L. & Catherine (Devine) Lyness. He received his education in Ryan, graduating from St. John?s Catholic School. On January 15, 1946 Robert was united in marriage to Dorothy Kehrli at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church, Ryan, Iowa. The couple farmed south of Ryan before moving into town in 1981. In addition to farming Bob sold cars for Kehrli & Kehrli, Ryan, Iowa.
Robert was a lifetime member of St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Ryan. Bob was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather; he dearly loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Robert is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Dorothy; his children, Coleen (Rick) Timmons of Manchester, Marilee (Carl) Steffen of Ryan, Jolene (Mitchell) Ryan of Manchester, Bill (Stacey) Lyness of Munster, Indiana, and Jerry (Sue) Lyness of Ramona, California; his grandchildren, Rob Timmons, Jamey & Jay Steffen, Joanna Schaul, Marisa, Allison & Blake Ryan and Emily & Mitchell Lyness; and two sisters-in-law, Rozina Lyness of Manchester, Iowa and Patsy Lyness of Greeley, Colorado.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur & Catherine Lyness, an infant son, James Robert Lyness; three brothers, Donald, Louis & Patrick Lyness and two sisters, Mary Lyness and Sister Mary Roberta Lyness.
Memorials in honor of Robert may be directed to the Endowment Fund, established for Sister Mary Roberta Lyness, at Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids.
