Robert Leroy Lam, 86, a resident at Silvercrest of Anamosa, formerly of Springville, died there Wednesday, January 7, 2009, following an extended illness. Memorial Services: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2009, at Whittier Friends Meeting House, with a luncheon to follow. Per Robert’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-seven years, Erma; four children, David (Marie Bearkiller) Lam, Steve (Dawn) Lam, Linda Fay, and Mark (Barbara) Lam, all of Springville; eleven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a sister, Velma Ritchie of Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gregg Lam; and his siblings, Della Groff, Nellie White, Bessie Stauffer, and Wayne Lam.
Bob was born June 23, 1922, the son of Cleveland and Lizzie (Bucher) Lam in rural Astoria, Illinois. He graduated from Astoria High School and graduated with honors from Coe College. He received his Masters of Education from the University of Iowa. On April 23, 1949, Bob married Erma Hoge at the Whittier Friends Meeting House. Robert worked as a social studies and history teacher at Central City High School for eighteen years. He was a longtime farmer and ran the Whittier Print Shop out of his basement.
Bob was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Astoria, Illinois, Whittier Friends Meeting, National Education Association, and Iowa State Education Association.
