Robert Lowell Laker, 80, of Center Point, died peacefully, Thursday, June 2, 2005, in his home, following a short illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. John Swanson, CDR USN. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2005, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include nieces and nephew, Charlet (Daniel) Lindley of Portland, Texas, Robert (Susan) Cole of Stanwood Washington, Sharon (Patrick) Gilday of Juneau, Alaska, Shirley (John) Swanson of Poulsbo, Washington, and Janet Cole of Arlington, Washington, their families; and many, many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; his parents; and a sister, Donna Cole.

Robert was born June 4, 1924, the son of Charles Arthur "Elmer? and Alberta Maude (Minor) Laker, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He served with the United States Army during World War II. On April 3, 1963, Robert was united in marriage to Eleanor Owens in Chicago, Illinois. He spent his childhood days in Chicago before moving to Cedar Rapids. Robert drove a cab in Cedar Rapids, and for 35 years worked for Allis Chalmers, which later became P.H. Harnischfeger, until his retirement. A photographer for many years, he also was a gentleman farmer/gardener, who especially enjoyed his garden of which he freely shared.
