Robert H. Goranson, 88, of Oneida, died Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood, after a lingering illness.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 18, 2007 at the Greeley United Methodist Church in Greeley by Interim Pastor Ruth Tibbott. Family will greet friends from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville and one hour before services Saturday at the church. Burial with military honors will be in Pineview Cemetery, Delaware.
Robert was born December 25, 1918 on a farm in rural Clayton County, the son of Frank and Florence (Parker) Goranson. He attended Greeley school. During and after his schooling, Robert assisted with the family farm south of Greeley until he went into the service on January 2, 1942. He served in the United States Army during WWII with the 32nd Infantry Division, 126 I Company 3rd BT in New Guinea and later with an Ordnance Division. He received his honorable discharge in June, 1945 and returned to farming. On August 20, 1945, Robert was united in marriage to Marian I. Zirtzman at the Delaware Methodist Church. The couple farmed two years in the Manchester area and twenty-six years south of Greeley. In January of 1974, they moved to Oneida and Robert went to work for Hutchinson Lumber in Delaware until his retirement in 1983. He entered the Edgewood Convalescent Home on February 26, 2006 when Marian could no longer care for him.
Robert was a member of the Greeley United Methodist Church and a 62 year member of the Greeley American Legion Post #566. He served on the Oneida council for a number of years and was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge. Robert enjoyed fishing, playing cards and being with his family and friends.
Robert is survived by his wife, Marian Goranson of Oneida; two children, Larry (Sherry) of Manchester and Jean Ann Lendt of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Jason Goranson, Dr. Angela Greif, Brian Goranson, John Lendt and Connie Kinner; two great-grandchildren, Hannah Greif and Maxwell Nelson; a brother, Lew (Shirley) Goranson of Greeley; a brother-in-law, Ruben Schnurstein of Frederika; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Florence Goranson; three sisters, Mabel Schnurstein, Betty Haynes and Mary Goranson; and a brother, Harold Goranson.
