Robert E. "Bob? Douglas, 74, of 58 Devonwood Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids, died Monday, November 8, 2004, at St. Luke?s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, of a massive stroke due to heart disease and type II diabetes. Services: 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 11, 2004, at Sharon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gary Dobbins, with military honors. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 10, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife Marilyn; his children, Lynn (Ed) Mann of Cedar Rapids, Gail (Brion) Wenhardt of Marion, Kirk (Teresa) Douglas of Eagan, Minnesota, and Lori (Don) Fritz of Shellsburg; his grandchildren, Dr. Stacy (Adam) Schulte, Jessica Fritz, (Justin Varner) Scott (Christine) Schwab, Melissa (Chad) French, Eric Mann, Todd Douglas, Tia Douglas, Heather Mann and Troy Douglas; his great-grandchildren, Korrey Chesmore, Jordan Schwab, Quinton Fritz, Rylee Belle Schwab, Tyson Schulte, Alyssa Varner, Shayna Varner and Courtney Varner.
Also surviving include a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Ralph Dunbar of Gowrie; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gary and Rosemary Strickland of Ypsilanti, Michigan; three nieces; one nephew; four great-nephews; one great-niece; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Mildred Douglas; an infant sister; an infant grandson; and his mother and father-in-law, Ruby and R.W. Strickland.
Bob was born July 26, 1930, the son of M.T. and Jesse (Laird) Douglas, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. On February 17, 1952, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Strickland in Fort Dodge. A graduate from Fort Dodge Junior College in 1951, Bob served with the Iowa National Guard in the 133rd Infantry Regiment as Sgt. 1st class, with an honorable discharge after nine years. He played trombone in the Reg Shive Dance Band and for 10 years, he played baritone in Karl King?s Municipal Band using King?s baritone. For 30 years, Bob worked for Rockwell Collins as a Sr. Technical Writer, retiring January 6, 1989.
Bob was a member of the Sharon United Methodist Church and the church choir. He held all the offices for the Cedar Rapids Coin Club and the Iowa Numismatic Society. A lifetime member of the Cedar Rapids Coin Club, Iowa Numismatic Society, and Central States Numismatic Society, Bob served as Governor for two years on the Board of Governors and for eight years as Secretary/Treasurer of Central States Numismatic Society. For 10 years, Bob and Marilyn owned MBM Coins.
His hobbies were model railroads, genealogy, music, woodworking, birds, fishing, mall walking at Westdale Mall, stamps, coins and computers. Bob loved being with his family, especially watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Sharon United Methodist Church, American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association in memory of Bob.
