Robert D. Copper, 81, of 2265 Daleview Dr., Marion, died Thursday, December 4, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2008, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, by Father John Gossman. The family will greet friends from 4 - 8 p.m., Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, with a Vigil Service beginning at 6:30 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Survivors include his children, Jean Atkinson of Redding, California, Bill (Lorrie) Copper of Marion, Connie Copper-Render of Cedar Rapids, Gary Copper of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Judy (Kevin) Reilly of Cedar Rapids, Dorothy Copper of Turpin, Oklahoma, Donald Copper of Marion, Audrey (Mike) Elledge of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Joan Copper of Marion, Iowa; 4 brothers, Gerald (Beverly) Copper of Charles City, Gilbert (Colleen) of Ft. Dodge, and Jim (Loretta) of Marion, Edwin “Joe” (Donna) of New Hampton. Also surviving is his former wife, Pauline Copper of Marion; daughter-in-law, Laurie Copper of Marion; 9 grandchildren, Lon, Zared, Zane, Derek, Brian, Alyssa, Brittany, Morgan, and Mason; and 1 great-grandson, Hagan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ray, and a daughter, Ardis.

Bob was born September 30, 1927, the son of Edwin and Catherine (Roth) Copper, in Orchard, Iowa. He graduated from Osage High School in 1945 and was active in wrestling. He was a Master Sgt. with the U.S. Army, serving with the CML Mortar Battalion during the Korean War. Bob was a longtime farmer, construction company owner, and property developer. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, the Marion American Legion Post #298, FFA, and was a 4H Leader. He was a nominee for “Marion’s Outstanding Citizen Award.” Bob was an active member of the Linn County Beef, Pork, and Sheep Producers, Knights of Columbus, and Farm Bureau.

A memorial fund has been established in Bob’s memory.
