Robert Ralph Brendes, 66, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011, in ManorCare Health Services, Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 4, 2011, at Christ Church Presbyterian, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Tim Dyck and Rev. Lucille King. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, June 3, 2011, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors by VFW Post #788.
Survivors include his wife, Lori; mother, Jeannette Brendes of Clarence, Iowa; his siblings, Jim (Jan) Brendes of Martelle, Iowa, Barbara (Bob) Young of Cedar Rapids and Galen (Sherry) Brendes of Marion; nieces and nephews, Jodi Weber, Gina Becthold, Jamie Brendes, Tony Young and Christopher Young; and many great nieces and nephews. Also surviving are Bob’s step daughters from his previous marriage, Jennifer (Leon) Bohn and Janelle Solberg both of Cedar Rapids; and five step grandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Brendes; and his niece, Melissa Ann Brendes.
Born February 27, 1945, in Davenport, Iowa, Robert was the son of Ralph and Jeannette (Meyer) Brendes. He attended the University of Iowa for three years, Coe, and Kirkwood College. Robert served his country in the United States Army in Vietnam. On May 26, 2007, he was united in marriage to Lori Florence. Bob retired from Evergreen Packaging after 30 years of service as a manager of computer programming.
Robert was a member of Christ Church Presbyterian and the VFW Post #788. He enjoyed golf, racquetball, traveling, cards, crossword puzzles and playing with his buddies, his cats, Molly and Magee.
