Robert Paul Turnis, 80, of 1632 Greensway Court NE, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Marion, died Friday, July 10, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following a lingering illness. Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. The family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m. Monday, July 13, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion where Vigil Service will be held at 6:00p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemary of Cedar Rapids; four children, Dyanne (Lorin) Dudley of Iowa City, Rebecca (Steve) Kemble of Cedar Rapids, Robert Paul II “Rob” (Julie) Turnis of Hiawatha, and Angela Chalstrom of Marion; three step-children, James (Cynthia) Heims of Iowa City, Douglas (Stephanie) Heims of Cedar Rapids, and Mary Ann Heims of Marion; eight grandchildren, Jamake (Kate), Rhiannon (Jason), Sarah, Derek, Alyssa, Kelsey, Katelynn, and Hailey; and one great-grandson, Xander. He is also survived by three brothers, John Turnis of Manchester, Arnold (Marty) Turnis of Monticello, and Chuck (Cheryl) Turnis of Wisconsin; and one sister, Georgene (James) McGovern of Epworth.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Eva; first wife, Betty; and one brother, Adrian Turnis.

Bob was born January 12, 1929, to George and Eva (Kramer) Turnis in Sand Springs, Iowa. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Monticello in 1949, and attended St. John’s College in Minnesota. Bob was married to Betty Ranberger on August 31, 1957, in Muscatine. Betty died on August 6, 1997. He later married Rosemary Heims (Strang) on October 23, 1998, in Monticello. Bob worked for many years doing highway construction with R.B. Burch, Gee Grading and Excavation, Duesenberg, and Dave Schmitt. He retired in 1994.

Bob was a member of the Woodlands Association, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, Operating Engineers Local #234 of Cedar Rapids, Knights of Columbus Council #5677 of Cedar Rapids, a lifetime member of the NRA, and a longtime member of the Boy Scouts of America. He was an avid collector of HO trains and Hallmark Christmas ornaments, was a huge Cubs fan, and enjoyed his yearly winter trips to Mission, Texas. Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Bob’s memory.
