Robert R. Schultz, 85, of Delhi, died Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following a short illness.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 3, 2009 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Manchester by Rev. David Weber. Family will greet friends 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., Friday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa and one hour before at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. in the Garden of Memories, Waterloo, Iowa.
Bob was born March 29, 1923 in Dodge Center, Minnesota, the son of Rev. Otto C. and Edna (Ilten) Schultz.
Bob graduated from the Maynard High School in 1942. He enlisted in the United States Navy on April 26, 1943 where he served during World War II as a SKV 2nd Class, serving in the Midway and Hawaiian Islands. He was discharge in 1946. Bob was united in marriage to Maxine L. Peters on July 29, 1945 at Westgate St. Peter’s Lutheran Church by his father, Rev. Otto Schultz. The couple owned the Schultz Briardale Store in Westgate for fifteen years and then moved to Cedar Falls where they owned the Rainbow Groceryland for twenty-eight years. Retiring in 1988, the couple moved to the Lake Delhi area.
Bob is a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, in Manchester and the Cedar Falls AMVETS, Post 49. Bob and Max were pioneers in the grocery business, with one of the first “Deli-style” cases with made from scratch salads and beans and had one of the first digital scales in Iowa back in the early 70’s. Bob took pride in selling his prime beef all over the world. Bob was a long standing member of the Black Hawk County Grocers Association and the Iowa Grocers Association. Bob was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs. He also enjoyed his retirement to Lake Delhi where he loved to fish and go pontooning with friends.
Bob is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maxine L. Schultz of Delhi, four children, Kevin (Lee Ann) Schultz of Cedar Falls, Alan Schultz of Spirit Lake, Brad Schultz of Cedar Falls, and Joel (Jackie) Schultz of Winthrop; three grandchildren, Brock, Jerod, and Jordan Schultz; one step-grandson, Andy Potratz; two brothers, Otto Schultz of Palm Bay, Florida and Paul (Barbara) Schultz of Janesville, Wisconsin; and a brother-in-law, Willis Kohls of Sparta, Wisconsin.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Otto and Edna Schultz; one brother, Phillip Schultz and three sisters, Roberta Marsh, Trudy Monter and Sally Kohls.
