Robert A. “Bob” Newland, 82, a resident of Heritage Nursing Home in Cedar Rapids, died there May 14, 2008, following a short illness. A memorial gathering will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 23rd, 2008, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Kim (Bill) Utterback of Cedar Rapids; three sons, Steven of Colorado, Mark (Barb) of Louisville, Colorado, and Mike (Karen) of Cedar Rapids; his sister, Shirley Rarick of Des Moines; his brother, Rodney of Marion; his cousin, Nettie Walden of Iowa City; grandchildren, Carrie Pederson, Katie Sergent, and Tom Caughlan of Minneapolis and Amanda and Taylor Newland of Cedar Rapids; and four great-grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol Carnes Hauser; and his brother, Richard.

Bob was born September 27, 1925, in Des Moines, the son of Hamilton and Alys (Adkins) Newland. He grew up and attended Center Point School until his senior year. He graduated from Des Moines Roosevelt High School and from Drake University. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army. Bob’s career as an insurance agent spanned fifty years serving Cedar Rapids and the surrounding communities, retiring from Frank B. Hall of Iowa. He volunteered as a statistician for Jefferson and Kennedy High School varsity football. He enjoyed golf and league bowling and was a perennial Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Bob’s family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Nursing Home for their compassionate care and enjoyment of Bob for the last three years and also Amenity Hospice for their assistance the last two weeks.

Memorials may be directed to Heritage Nursing home in Robert’s memory.
