Robert "Bob? I. Birkicht, 77, of Cedar Rapids, went peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Wednesday, December 18, 2002, in his home. Services: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 21, 2002, at St. Jude?s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Tom Rastrelli. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, December 20, 2002, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a Vigil Service will begin at 7:00 p.m., followed by military rites conducted by American Legion Hanford Post 5. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Ruth; his daughter, Lori Herren and partner Mike Vogel of Minneapolis; two sister-in-laws, Wilma Lynch and Inez Birkicht, both of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Donald, William and Richard.
Bob was born June 15, 1925, the son of Rodney and Rose (Keegan) Birkicht, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1944, and served in the United States Navy as petty officer 3rd class during World War II at Treasure Island Navy Station. On October 21, 1950, he was united in marriage to Ruth Ressler in Cedar Rapids. Bob worked at Cherry-Burrell for 40 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. Jude?s Catholic Church, a 50-year member of American Legion Hanford Post 5, UAW #1024, Goodfellows, Coffee Club at Wilson Avenue Hy-Vee and a mall-walker at Westdale Mall.
Bob was a special person and a father in spirit to many, including children in the neighborhood, who knew he would have candy waiting for them.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude?s Catholic Church or to Mercy Hospice in Bob?s memory.
