Robert J. Berends, 77, a resident of Crestridge Care Center in Maquoketa, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, August 9, 2010, at the care center. Memorial Service: 9:00 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2010, at Valley View Baptist Church, Cedar Rapids. Inurnment: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Arrangements with Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Fern of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Robynn (Dean) Kralek of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Danielle Kohl of Decatur, Alabama; a very, very, special nephew, Ron Berends of Cedar Rapids; stepchildren, Stacy, Stephanie, Samantha, Sara and Scott; his brother, Donald (Josephine) of Cedar Rapids; and his sister, Mildred Knowles of Independence.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Lola Fern Duckett.
Robert was born January 31, 1933, the son of Henry and Marie (Meyocks) Berends, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He married Fern Richards in May, 1987. Robert worked in the construction business and was a proud union member of Labor Local 43 for 35 years. Robert loved his three dogs, Mugsy, Sassy and Rowdy.
