Robert L. Benson, 69, of 1505 14th Avenue S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Tuesday, December 9, 2008, in St. Luke’s Hospital, in Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Services: 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 13, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Bill Harnish. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, December 12, 2008, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Military honors by American Legion Hanford Post #5.
Survivors include his wife, Julie; son, Michael (Jodi) Benson of Newhall, Iowa; stepson, Tom (Susie) Wilson of Hopkinton; grandchildren, Hailey and Brett; step-grandchildren, Chris, Chaim, Lucas, Lawson, BriAnna and Cloie; siblings, Ron, Don, Dianne (Larry) Brannaman and Donna all of Cedar Rapids, Larry (Judy) of Solon, Dick (Cynthia) of Luzerne; a special family friend, Jean Hlavacek of Cedar Rapids; and his two pets Fred and Lexi.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Brett.
Robert was born September 21, 1939, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Kenneth and Violet (Henecke) Benson. A lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids, Robert graduated from Jefferson High School in 1958. He served in the Iowa National Guard. On April 21, 1998, he was united in marriage to Julie Chapman in Las Vegas, Nevada. For 27 years he was a truck driver, retiring in 2000 from Crouse Cartridge.
Robert was a member of Teamsters Local #238 and American Legion Hanford Post #5.
Robert’s joys were fishing and spending time at his cabin at Delhi. He also enjoyed deer hunting with his family.
A memorial fund has been established in Robert’s memory.
