Robert K. "Bob? Andrews, 78, of 5701 Briarwood St. SW, died Friday, December 31, 2004, at Living Center West, Cedar Rapids, after a short illness. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, with visitation 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Murdoch Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.

A Cedar Rapids native, Bob is survived by his wife, Evelyn; daughter Kaye Ross of Los Altos, Calif.; and daughter of the heart, Karen Summers of Crystal Springs, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Loudeam Andrews; his mother and father, Nellie Brockman and Ralph Andrews; and stepmother, Elsie Andrews.

Bob was born at home April 20, 1926. He was a proud 1944 graduate of Roosevelt High School, where he excelled in art and music and was inducted into the National Honor Society. A self-taught pianist, Bob enjoyed accompanying singers and friends, and later helped with set construction at the Community Theater of Cedar Rapids.

Upon graduation, Bob entered the U.S. Army Air Force on July 19, 1944, at Ft. Snelling, Minn., as a private. He spent his tour of duty as a clerk for the occupation forces headquartered at Orly Airport near Paris. It was a life-changing experience - especially the off-duty trips to Paris - that Bob talked about until the end of his life. Trained in radio mechanics and electronics, he was discharged as a corporal at Ft. Sheridan, Ill., on June 26, 1946.

He married Evelyn Hockemeyer Ross on Oct. 18, 1958, in Rockford, Ill. Bob worked for many years at People?s Bank. But most of his work-life was spent with Linn County, where he worked for the Department of Social Services and later, the Board of Supervisors. He retired in 1995.

In retirement, Bob remained mostly at home, delighting in the antics of the couple?s three cats and the challenge of a good crossword puzzle. Bob will be remembered as a kind and generous man.

The family would like to thank the staff of Living Center West; nurse Shellie at Mercy Hospital, and Dr. Marc Wilkinson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cedar Valley Humane Society, 7411 Mt. Vernon Road SE, or to the general fund at Hope Lutheran Church, 2736 Bowling St. SW.
