Richard "Dick? Williams, 79, formerly of Coggon, and a resident of Willow Gardens Care Center, Marion, died Tuesday, February 7, 2006, at the care center following a long illness. Services: 11:30 a.m. Friday, February 10, 2006, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Thomas Hedtke, with military honors. Burial: Wilcox Cemetery, Viola. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 - 8 p.m. today (Thursday.)
Survivors include his wife, Lavon of Coggon; two children, Randy K. Williams and Roland (Rebecca) Williams, all of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his siblings, Marian Odeen of Marion, Nelda (Martin) Bettes of Guthrie, Oklahoma, David Cummings of Fairview, Carrie Hart of Tucson, Arizona, Donald Cummings of Marion and Margaret Peiffer of Springville; and his dog, Mio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant children; a son, Raymond; and a sister, Nancy Cummings.
Dick was born May 13, 1926, the son of Delbert and Mildred (Raymond) Williams in Fairview, Iowa. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Dick served his country during World War II as a firefighter. In 1987, Dick and Lavon Atkinson were married in Cedar Rapids. He worked as a carpenter for much of his life and had later worked for Murdoch Funeral Homes as an assistant. He was a member of St. Paul?s Lutheran Church in Marion and Marion American Legion Post No. 298, which will provide military honors.
